3 Tips for a Kickass 10-Minute Showcase

Recently, in my Business Referral Networking Group meeting, I was given 10 minutes to showcase what Speech Ionizers does to a group of close to 50 business owners.

10 minutes!

You might ask how long 10 minutes is. Well, it’s as short as listening to Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”, thrice.

So presenting a Business Showcase in 10 minutes is extremely challenging!

Fortunately, I guess the showcase pulled off pretty well, as seen by the happy faces and engaging crowd here:

The result of that presentation?

3 immediate referrals and 5 collaborative opportunities opened with the business owners present.. Not too bad for a 10 minute “effort”! 🙂

Reflecting on the process, I’d like to share with everyone some strategies I employed to score in that very precious showcase slot.

So, here are 3 tips that you can use in any upcoming business pitch that you have!

 

1 – Show >>> Tell

It’s certainly very tempting and easier to whip up a pretty Powerpoint deck telling your audience all your services.

But if you could, show it to them.

If you have a physical product, demonstrate how it works.
If you have ‘live’ testimonies of your services, present them.
Even better, if the audience can experience the value that you offer, give it to them!

Remember, when the audience walks out of any presentation, they will likely forget more than half of the information you present.
But they will always remember the feeling they had when they applauded for you at the end.

In my showcase, I only had 2 messages to tell the audience:

1. Speeches come in different styles, and we know exactly how to deliver them.
2. Our training methods are as interactive as they are effective.

So here’s what I did:

The first 2 minutes – packed with a volley of punchlines to draw the laughter.
What I’m showing – if humour is the style you’re looking for, I know how to help you get there.

The next 5 minutes – a simple speech training activity.
What I’m showing – you’re going to have so much fun learning with us.

Following 1.5 minutes – services we offer.
What I’m showing – Information can be concise, relevant and easy to remember.

Final 1.5 minutes – an uplifting call-to-action that aligned with the values of what Speech Ionizers stands for.
What I’m showing – if you want to work on inspiring powerful presentation, I know how to help you get there too.

2 – Set Up the Audience

Especially if you’re working with tight time constraints, you gotta get your audience to jump into your message the very moment you start speaking.

“Setting up” your audience can come in many forms – which includes

  • Having samples of your product readily available before you speak.
  • Distributing teaser collateral. (Note: Teaser, not dumping facts before you even start)
  • Playing relevant media (audio/video) before the event starts.
  • Decorating the presentation venue.
  • Having the emcee introduce you in the way that achieves your outcomes.

And many others. The list is non-exhaustive and is only limited by how creative you are!

You want your audience to anticipate your segment.

In the context of the Speech Ionizers showcase,

Activity cards were placed on every seat, with specific instructions not to open them until the activity starts.
What I’m setting up – look forward to my presentation later!

My credentials were read out for me.
What I’m setting up – An elevated authority as the subject matter expert.

A humorously crafted bio with a funny holding slide as I was being introduced.
What I’m setting up – warming up the laughs so that my first punchline can be landed with maximum impact.

Remember, your presentation has to start WAY BEFORE you say your first word!

 

3 – Give Everyone Massive Value!

If the audience walks away with something of value to them, they are more likely to remember you.

And being remembered for the right reasons is always awesome. Right?

So, give your listeners something to take away every time you take the stage.
It can come in the form of knowledge, insights or even skills that they can use in future.

You don’t have to divulge your trade secrets or pour out every single bit of your proprietary knowledge.
As long as you’re able to trigger the “Ahah!” moment in your listeners, you know you’ve given them enough value.
And they’d be remembering you in a long time to come.

 

So, what value could I possibly give everyone? Hmmm…
I taught everyone how to… “Talk Cock, Sound Smart!” 😀

What value I’m giving – Everyone walked away with a new skill to rattle on at any strange topic thrown at them. Isn’t that a fantastic skill anyone can have? 😛

Business showcases are always designed to cater to the audience’s WIIFM (what’s in it for me) gap. Stand out from the crowd by giving more than just answers. After all, it’s GIVERS’ GAIN.
