For many of us, just the thought of speaking in front of many people easily makes our knees go weak — it’s normal! We’ve all had our fair share of this phase in our lives. But the good news is, it becomes better and better as we practice. To help you, we’ve come up with a list of effective tips that you can make use of in helping you deliver your first speech successfully. Make sure to take note of each of the items as you read.
✘ Read Your Notes
Do not read your deck word per word. They are meant to act as your guide, not your script. If you do so, it will easily drive your audience to snoozeland. The worst part is that it might even give them the impression that you don’t really know what you’re talking about. We’re gonna say this a couple of times here in this article, but believe you us, preparation is the key.
✘ Overdo Your Deck
If you want to keep your presentation interesting, overdoing your deck won’t do the trick. Instead, include elements that are just enough. Plan properly in terms of theme, colors, and contrast. Use the rule of thirds if you can and don’t paste too many word. Rather, use images and videos which you can use to visualise your messages. And as we’ve said, use the animations sparingly as to not cause distractions.
✘ Use Jargons
When giving a speech or a presentation, your aim is to impart a certain message to your audience. Avoid using words that may possibly hinder you to attain this goal. Define words if you must as to make sure that you’re getting your message across clearly.
✔ Prepare for Your Speech
No matter how comfortable a person is with this whole public speaking shebang, winging it is never a good idea. Don’t expect to talk for at least 10 mins. without a planned structure and still make sense. Take time to think out your speech. Plan your outline very well. Study and review it over and over again until you memorise your topic at the back of your head.
✔ Start & Finish Strong
Start with a bang. Drop a fact or ask a mind-boggling question — it’s up to you on how you can make a really, really interesting start. This sets up the impression and mood of your audience that may potentially last until the end of your talk so you better to think it out well. And of course, don’t to wrap up your message before you end. This time, make sure to finish with a double bang.
✔ Interact with Your Audience
It may be your speech but this doesn’t mean that you cannot involve your audience at all. Of course you still can! If you have a small audience and you have the ability to get close to the them, then feel free to do so. But if you have a big set of listener and interacting comes as a challenge, you may trying doing small things like asking them to repeat a word, making a quick poll, or doing a recap. This ensures you that your words are getting across and that your audience are kept attentive as of the time being.
The main takeaway from this post is to come as prepared as you can be. Never underestimate the power of practice. Because if you do it over and over again, you become better every time.
